Gardener Aides in this role will help weed, leaf and plant debris cleanup in or near animal exhibit areas. The role is just Wednesdays, 8-10:30 and will run through approximately the end of October-end date for the season will be dependent on weather. Volunteers will be invited to return in April or May every year.
Volunteers will:
- Weed, trim or deadhead herbaceous annuals and perennial plants
- Assist in leaf clean up and plant grooming
- Assist in maintaining clean and organized bedding areas and ornamental container gardens
- Assist with the ongoing maintenance of soil and plants
- Collect, transport, and properly sort plant debris and soil for compost or reuse.
Volunteers must be able to:
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of gardening and horticultural practices
- Work independently as well as in a group
- Be comfortable with a very physical role including lifting things, kneeling, standing for longer periods, stooping or bending over, reaching, etc.
- Be willing to work in warm and/or wet outside conditions
