ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: UPAVIM of Guatemala City

Description of the Organization:

UPAVIM's mission is to empower women in the neighborhood of La Esperanza, located on the outskirts of Guatemala City, by giving them opportunities to economically support their families, while also providing services to improve the quality of life for the entire community.

Over the past 33 years, UPAVIM has grown from a small baby-weighing program to a women's cooperative employing over 100 local women and making handmade fair-trade crafts sold around the world. The proceeds from these crafts pay the women's salaries, fund UPAVIM's community health clinic and UPAVIM's school, which includes a daycare, pre-school, and elementary school (K-6th). In addition, the organization manages the first public library in the neighborhood, offers free English classes and tutoring for all ages, and runs a bakery to provide fresh and affordable goods to the community. Please find out more by visiting our website.

Overview: UPAVIM seeks virtual English volunteers looking to support an innovative elementary school from home. With just a couple of hours a week, you can make a HUGE impact on children. English allows children to access better middle and high schools in Guatemala and opens up tremendous career possibilities for young adults with otherwise limited options. The volunteer position requires an 8-week commitment of 2 hours/week. Volunteering options are usually in the afternoon and you have the ability to schedule yourself around your commitments. Each volunteer will be assigned to a small group of children for 20 minutes sessions each. You will also have the support of a Guatemalan teacher who will be available during the sessions for troubleshooting. Guides for interacting with children will be provided. Basic Spanish is required to better facilitate the sessions, but the goal is to speak mostly in English. Covid has presented many challenges, but the advent of virtual opportunities is one benefit we plan to harness for the benefit of our children. Help us be on the forefront of international volunteering from the comfort of your home!
