Introduction to this Volunteer Opportunity:
Having the right insurance is essential, especially In economically challenging times. So many people in our community are losing insurance and don't know where to turn. Council on Aging of Buncombe County is here to assist people of ALL AGES for free.

Council on Aging of Buncombe County is a designated Navigator agency regarding the Marketplace options for health insurance coverage. Staff and volunteers assist community members with education and purchasing health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.
Staff and volunteers assist community members with education and purchasing health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, this program assists people of ALL ages.
Certified Navigators can answer questions and walk people through their heath coverage options. Financial help is available, 9 in 10 North Carolinians who signed up for Marketplace coverage received financial help paying their premiums.
The Council on Aging of Buncombe County is a Navigator Agency for Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Transylvania, and Yancey Counties. We need Navigator volunteers in all 8 counties.

How YOU can Help:
Help families acquire access to affordable healthcare through the Marketplace -- become an Affordable Care Act (ACA) Navigator! Volunteers are responsible for providing balanced, unbiased, accurate guidance and information with which our clients can make an informed decision. There is an extensive online training class, after which you will need to receive certification, and then you will shadow with a current certified counselor, until you're ready to help clients on your own.

We are very flexible and will work with your schedule.


The safety of you and our clients is our highest priority. Here's what's required for this role:

  • Clear criminal background check
  • Orientation and training with Council on Aging of Buncombe County
  • Computer literate with good written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to sensitively work with people of all ages and backgrounds, counseling them about issues that can be intimidating and confusing, as well as the ability to retain information relevant to health insurance provisions and claims filing procedures.

Description

The Council on Aging (COA) is a nonprofit organization that provides services to individuals age 60 and older. COA provides personal, caring support and assistance with the challenges of growing older. We provide referrals and help in learning the Medicare system, staying healthy and independent at home, and support for caregivers.
