Food Bank For New York City partners with GrowNYC Greenmarkets to reduce food waste and to ensure more New Yorkers have nutritious farm grown food. Volunteers will help collect locally grown food donations from farmers at the end of local greenmarkets which will then be delivered to a nearby Food Bank member charity. All volunteers must register on Food Bank for New York City's Volunteer Portal in order to participate: https://volunteer.foodbanknyc.org/
Saturdays from 2:30-5pm
Things to consider:
The amount of donated food will vary from day to day, so some shifts may end early. There may also be downtime as we wait for farmers to close up for the day. We appreciate your patience and flexibility!
We ask that volunteers are comfortable lifting up to 35 pounds.
We recommend traveling light and leaving valuables at home as there will not be storage onsite. We encourage you to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during the shift.
All volunteers must agree to our Volunteer Waiver, Covid-19 Waiver, and Photo Release Waiver in order to participate.
Volunteers are expected to present a neat appearance and dress according to the requirements of the volunteer shift.
We ask that volunteers do not wear revealing attire such as muscle shirts, crop tops, "short shorts" or see-through clothing.
Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required for safety. Ballet flats, loafers, sandals, flip flops, and high-heels are not allowed.
Our staff reserves the right to turn away or reassign volunteers not dressed appropriately for their shift.
- Volunteers must be at least 13 years old to participate.
- All volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian.
- All volunteers under the age of 18 must have our Volunteer Waiver, Covid-19 Waiver and Photo Release Waiver complete by a parent/legal guardian in advance of their volunteer shift.
- All volunteers under the age of 18 should contact firstname.lastname@example.org at least 3 business days in advance of their first shift to confirm they have met our chaperone and waiver requirements.
Food Bank for New York City has implemented regulations, policies, and protocols that will be continually updated and revised in accordance with on-going public health information and official guidance from the CDC, New York State Department of Health and New York City Department of Health.
All volunteers must agree to our current COVID-19 Waiver in order to participate in-person.
All in-person projects have been modified to meet social distancing guidelines and safety requirements. We require volunteers to wear face masks that properly cover the nose and mouth at all in-person volunteer events, regardless of vaccination status. All volunteers who are age 5 and older are required to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination in order to participate at in-person volunteering.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 before your shift begins, please cancel your registration and stay home.
If you test positive for COVID-19 or develop symptoms within the 48 hours following your shift, please contact email@example.com immediately, so we may proceed with the appropriate next steps.
No additional volunteer opportunities at this time.
About Food Bank For New York City
39 Broadway, Floor 10, New York, NY 10006, US
To end hunger by organizing food, information and support for community survival and dignity. For volunteer opportunities, please visit us at http://volunteer.foodbanknyc.org/
Founded in 1983, Food Bank For New York City operates the country's largest food bank, providing community food programs throughout the five boroughs of New York City with food, related products and support services. Today we distribute more than 51 million pounds of food every year to over 1,200 community-based programs that serve free meals to the City's hungry. These programs include soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, senior centers, low-income day care centers and other nonprofit programs that reach out to people in need of food. Operating out of our Bronx-based warehouse Food Bank For New York City collects, inspects, and distributes millions of pounds of food. Food Bank For New York City also provides support services to the City's emergency food providers by hosting nutrition and food safety workshops, networking sessions and other education initiatives. We use our central role in the City's anti-hunger effort to provide legislators, advocates and the media with information about hunger in the City so that they may formulate effective policy and heighten public awareness of this important issue. Food Bank For New York City is a certified member of the Second Harvest National Food Bank Network.
