Food Bank For New York

Project Description:
Food Bank For New York City partners with GrowNYC Greenmarkets to reduce food waste and to ensure more New Yorkers have nutritious farm grown food. Volunteers will help collect locally grown food donations from farmers at the end of local greenmarkets which will then be delivered to a nearby Food Bank member charity. Volunteers must register on Volunteer.foodbanknyc.org in advance.

Things to consider:

  • The amount of donated food will vary from day to day, so some shifts may end early. There may also be downtime as we wait for farmers to close up for the day. We appreciate your patience and flexibility!

  • We ask that volunteers are comfortable lifting up to 35 pounds.

  • We recommend traveling light and leaving valuables at home as there will not be storage onsite. We encourage you to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during the shift.

  • All volunteers must agree to our Volunteer Waiver, Covid-19 Waiver, and Photo Release Waiver in order to participate.

Dress Code:

  • Volunteers are expected to present a neat appearance and dress according to the requirements of the volunteer shift.

  • We ask that volunteers do not wear revealing attire such as muscle shirts, crop tops, "short shorts" or see-through clothing.

  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required for safety. Ballet flats, loafers, sandals, flip flops, and high-heels are not allowed.

  • Our staff reserves the right to turn away or reassign volunteers not dressed appropriately for their shift.

Age Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be at least 13 years old to participate.

  • All volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian.

  • All volunteers under the age of 18 must have our Volunteer Waiver, Covid-19 Waiver and Photo Release Waiver complete by a parent/legal guardian in advance of their volunteer shift.

  • All volunteers under the age of 18 should contact volunteer@foodbanknyc.org at least 3 business days in advance of their first shift to confirm they have met our chaperone and waiver requirements.

COVID-19 Policies:

  • Food Bank for New York City has implemented regulations, policies, and protocols that will be continually updated and revised in accordance with on-going public health information and official guidance from the CDC, New York State Department of Health and New York City Department of Health.

  • All volunteers must agree to our current COVID-19 Waiver in order to participate in-person.

  • All in-person projects have been modified to meet social distancing guidelines and safety requirements. We require volunteers to wear face masks that properly cover the nose and mouth at all in-person volunteer events, regardless of vaccination status. All volunteers who are age 5 and older are required to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination in order to participate at in-person volunteering.

  • If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 before your shift begins, please cancel your registration and stay home.

  • If you test positive for COVID-19 or develop symptoms within the 48 hours following your shift, please contact volunteer@foodbanknyc.org immediately, so we may proceed with the appropriate next steps.
