Summer Host Family in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

ORGANIZATION: AMERICAN EXCHANGE PROJECT INC

This summer, be part of America’s first free exchange program between states-host a student from another part of the country for a week in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts!

About the American Exchange Project: In an effort to unite our divided country, the American Exchange Project (AEP) is building America’s first national domestic exchange program. Our program sends high school students on free trips in the summer after senior year to American towns and cities that are very different from their own. While there, they enjoy a variety of experiences that help them walk in the shoes of locals. For example, this summer, AEPers from Muskogee, OK will take in the view from the top of the Empire State Building, while AEPers from Palo Alto, CA will work with cattle in Ennis, MT. During summer 2022, we will send almost 200 students on trips to 39 towns in 24 states.

About host families: Staying with a host family is an essential part of the AEP experience. Through our host family model, students will get to experience day-to-day life in the community they are visiting, and families get to know someone from a completely different part of the country.

What does hosting an AEP student look like? AEP Host Families will be asked to provide for their student: transportation to and from the airport (should the distance not exceed 1.5 hours), provide 2 square meals a day (AEP will cover lunches and a few other meals), and a comfortable, safe accommodation for their student. What you would hope for your own child’s host family we ask that you provide for the student you host.

We ask that host families assist with transportation to and from AEP activities whenever possible. We allow host students to drive visiting students as long as both sets of parents sign off on this before the trip. Host Families will receive a stipend to cover student(s) meals for their 7-10 day stay.

How to sign up as a host family: Complete the host family form below. If you are selected as an AEP host family, every member of your family aged 18 and over must complete a federal background check. You will then complete a Host Family Training over Zoom, where you can get a better idea of what hosting will be like and have a chance to ask any questions.

Mission Statement

Americans are losing faith in one another. Many of our nation’s children feel they are growing up in bubbles, isolated from people unlike themselves, while our nation’s adults listen only to the like-minded. AEP's mission is to facilitate interactions between Americans from different backgrounds in the interest of forming "a more perfect union". How? AEP is a first-of-its-kind, free domestic summer exchange program for graduated high school seniors. This is a chance to travel, explore, and learn more about the United States from the people and places in it.

Description

During the Summer Exchange, high school seniors will spend two weeks of their summer in a community completely different from their own, hosted by other AEP students, they will explore, learn, and build personal and professional connections.

At the end of the trip, students will work together on a project documenting their experience. The project is up to the students, an opportunity to showcase their travels, adventures, and connections that they will share with the community during a final farewell ceremony with host families and community leaders.
