Service Term: October 2022-October 2023

Application Deadline: September 1

Organization Profile: Girls on the Run of the Bay Area is a chapter of a nationwide nonprofit that builds healthy, confident girls. Our organization serves ~2000 families each year across a region that includes San Francisco and four surrounding counties. We partner with schools and communities to implement an evidence-based curriculum in our after-school program for participants in 3rd through 8th grades. The Girls on the Run program provides an interactive way to learn positive life skills, including lessons on important topics such as goal-setting, cooperation, thoughtful decision-making, and self-respect; all while training for our culminating 5k run/walk event. The innovative curriculum teaches girls to listen and open up, while also encouraging them to build strong relationships and harness their inner strength. Our important mission is accomplished by giving participants the tools to make positive choices for a healthy body and mind, while reducing the many risks they face today. Girls on the Run believes that all communities should have access to our programs. We strive to eliminate barriers to participation, be intentional about staff and volunteer diversity, and to promote a culture of inclusion across the organization.

Position Profile: We are seeking a Community Engagement VISTA to play a critical role in our capacity to serve more families. You will interact remotely with a dynamic, fun group of staff, and build your network of professional connections (team members will be present for office visits or in-person meetings about 6 days per month). You will get hands-on experience with many facets of a business, and be supported in growing in your areas of interest by participating fully in the workings of a fast-paced nonprofit organization. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to professionally develop within a variety of areas, including marketing, operations, recruitment, project management, etc. We are looking for a self-starter who is mission-driven and ready to jump in with both feet! The AmeriCorps VISTA program is a year-long term of service (October 2022-'23) with Girls on the Run. The Community Engagement VISTA will work mostly remotely from one of the 5 counties in our territory (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo), with occasional office visits and visits to our program locations (about 6 times per month)

  • Act as the first point of contact for prospective volunteers and serve as a program ambassador.
  • Engage and onboard coaches by responding quickly and accurately to inquiries and moving applicants through the pipeline with speed and care.
  • Research and build relationships in area organizations to provide a fresh perspective to volunteer recruiting
  • Build on our retention and appreciation programs and initiatives for volunteers: Take ownership of building retention planning into every interaction and process.
  • Along with the rest of the program team, co-host and facilitate our fun, interactive coach trainings, which return to an in-person format this year.
  • Track and report on recruitment metrics throughout the season: build on established systems for data collection.
  • Build on our brand awareness; analyze prior social media campaigns to understand what has worked best. Develop written and visual content for social media channels as needed to effectively recruit coaches and families.
  • Support coaches throughout the duration of their experience with our program. Visit programs to assess quality using our feedback rubrics.
  • Support a great coach experience at our season-ending 5K event in November and May.
