The Gili Shark Conservation Project is an award-winning conservation and data collection program and the first of its kind in the Gili Islands in Indonesia. We want to make a real difference in the three Gili Islands and its marine reserve. To have a real impact on our environment we need your help!

We are always looking for enthusiastic people who want to live in paradise and make a difference during their holiday or gap year. Help the sharks, coral reefs and the community of Gili Air by giving your time and love. You don’t need to be a shark expert or a diver to join our project, however, a passion and commitment to marine conservation is important. We appreciate all the unique skills that you can bring to our project and welcome people from every corner of the world.

During your stay with the Gili Shark Conservation Project, you will learn how to dive/improve your dive skills, and gain two PADI specialities, PADI Scientific Diver and PADI Shark Aware Conservation. We teach you everything you need to know about our research including; species identification, underwater survey methodologies, coral restoration, how to analyze and input data and much more!

Working with our incredible research team is a one-time opportunity that you will never forget!

About Gili Shark Conservation

Location:

Gili Air, Gili indah, Pemenang, Nusa Tengarra Barat 83352, ID

Mission Statement

Our mission is to protect and restore the coral reef environment within the Gili Matra Marine Recreational Reserve and to help to create the first recognized shark nursery ground in Indonesia by 2025. To achieve our goal we conduct research using multiple research methods including; roving survey dives, photographic identification, coral health index surveys, coral watch surveys and coral restoration. Through our weekly beach clean-ups and outreach projects, we educate the local community and visitors of the Gili Islands about the importance of our ocean and what we can do to protect it.

Description

We are an award-winning organization designed around conservation through citizen scientific research in the following areas:

  • Shark conservation (Shark Identification and Survey Dives)
  • Marine life conservation (Turtle Identification, Dive Against Debris and Survey Dives)
  • Coral conservation (Coral Restoration project, Coral Watch surveys and coral health index surveys)

It's our dream to be an international marine research centre that hosts researchers, scientists, and ocean lovers worldwide. A place in the heart of our community where we provide education in solving ocean-related issues. A home to people who want to make the world a little bit more beautiful.

We host participants from around the world for a minimum of 2 weeks. On average, people stay between 3-8 weeks to get fully involved and give back to the project. We are all working very closely together and have a team/family-like atmosphere at the project. You will be a critical member of the team and may be in charge of various data collection projects depending on your interests, goals, and length of stay.
