We're expanding our Education program to offer flexible 1:1 tutoring for adult learners. Many of our students work hourly jobs where their schedule changes from week to week, or they have barriers like transportation or childcare to overcome. These factors can make it difficult for them to attend a traditional weekly English class. We also have students that need specific instruction for things like the GED, studying for citizenship, or communicating with their children's teachers.
We assign our volunteer ESL tutors to work 1:1 with an adult ESL student for 2 hours each week. The length of time will vary depending on the students' learning goals. For example, someone who needs help studying for the NC Driver's License written exam will complete that goal quicker than someone studying for the GED exam.
The student and the tutor will work out their schedule with each other. Study sessions can take place in the evenings, weekends, over Zoom, at coffee shops, at the park where children can play, etc. We do require that tutoring be done in a public location during normal business hours; no in-home tutoring. Both virtual and in-person options available.
