This AmeriCorps Volunteer In Service to America (VISTA) position is sponsored by the County of Hawai'i's Department of Research and Development (R&D). R&D informs planning, policy, and programmatic decision-making with data-driven research and collaborates in the development and funding of initiatives seeking environmental, community, and economic sustainability. The County of Hawai'i is one of four counties in the State of Hawai'i. It encompasses the Island of Hawai'i which is very rural with a relatively small population of 200,000. R&D VISTA members are part of a team that is enhancing the community’s capacity to collaboratively tackle complex challenges like climate change, energy, equitable mobility, food systems, disaster recovery and resilience, and economic recovery. The work requires a positive attitude, self-motivation, independence, organization, computer and communication skills, flexibility, creativity, curiosity, humility, and the ability to work effectively with people from a wide diversity of social, cultural, and economic backgrounds and experiences. The VISTA assignment is gratifying work that improves the lives of our island’s most vulnerable residents and the VISTA member will develop the ability to work across government and community networks to engage community around wicked problems.

This is a Volunteer position with a bi-weekly living allowance of $641.20.

Member Duties : The Housing Affordability Solutions VISTA will build community capacity and readiness to increase housing affordability for Hawaii Island residents, especially ALICE and low-income families and including farmworkers to address a limiting factor to the growth of Hawaii Island agriculture. With new and increased streams of revenue to address homelessness and housing affordability coming from Federal, State, and County sources, the Housing Affordability Solutions VISTA will work with community, private, and public sector partners and stakeholders to catalyze initiatives that accelerate housing construction, rehabilitate existing housing stock, and diversify housing choices on Hawaii Island.
