Mission Statement

Legacy Family Center's goal is to address unmet social and educational needs of children and their families with emphasis on developing the capacity of the family, especially West Africans, through partnerships and collaborations. LFC values volunteers, who commit to LFC’s mission and vision and show interest in working collaboratively with a diverse group of volunteers, families, and other organizational stakeholders. Volunteers who show tolerance for the "productive discomfort" sometimes involved in collaboration (i.e. multiple decision-makers, accepting input from many, a slower timeline for accomplishing priorities) Volunteers, who make positive communication a priority, including constructive feedback and raising issues/problems/concerns in a proactive way so they can be addressed by LFC. Volunteers, who demonstrate willingness to invest time in training and personal/professional development to continue to learn and grow.

Description

Legacy Family Center is a small community-based nonprofit that serves Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center in Minnesota. The organization was formed by four moms to support other moms with education and social service resources. LFC connects families, young children, and youth to community resources (transportation, mental wellbeing information, food sources, tutoring programs for youth and early literacy for young children). In the last year LFC launched a successful literacy program that incentivizes youth to read to young children in the home or the community. LFC wants to expand the program to apartment complexes in Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center.

Goals for 2022:

  1. Raise $192,000 in funding
  2. Contract with one or two grant writers
  3. Expand the literacy program to fifty or more youth
  4. Secure an office space and add administrative staff
