Whether you’re a highly experienced horse person, or a novice, we value everyone’s time and talent. Our mantra is "many hands make light work". We offer a huge array of volunteer opportunities...which one is right for you?

  • Provide support with our horses; grooming, exercising horses, stall cleaning, feeding
  • Assisting with therapy sessions at our one-day retreats, three-day retreats, and four-week sessions
  • Offsite clinics at San Diego Military Installations.
  • Serve on Cornerstone’s fundraising Board of Directors
  • Serve on Special event committees
  • Social Media -good gawd do we need help with this!
  • Office/admin support

All volunteers work directly with our instructors, professional horse trainers, and staff to provide assistance before, during and after each client’s scheduled therapy session. For volunteers interested in working in a hands-on way with our clients, we require you to have extensive, and current, horsemanship/horse handling experience. For those who don’t have this level of experience, there are plenty of opportunities to be of service and enjoy participating in each session as you develop the necessary skills for one-on-one interaction with our clients.

Qualifications that are specific for volunteers on the equine therapy session team have an *

  1. Must be 18 years of age or older
  2. Must attend an orientation and pass the volunteer training.
  3. Must be able to walk and jog on uneven ground. *
  4. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. *
  5. Must commit to a weekly, same day/same time schedule.
  6. Agree to a minimum 3-month commitment on the same day/time

Responsibilities

Volunteer dependability is essential for the smooth running of our programs. We ask our volunteers for a weekly commitment to provide consistency for our clients

  1. Punctuality is important! Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your session time.
  2. Be able and willing to learn, and follow, all horsemanship procedures.
  3. Be able and willing to follow all safety procedures.
  4. Be able and willing to assist staff with all barn chores.
  5. Be able and willing to perform assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

Our Mission is to save and restore the lives of active duty service members, veterans, first responders, and frontline medical workers battling service related PTSD and physical trauma through equine assisted therapy.

Description

Cornerstone offers multiple programs that include one-day retreats, 3-day retreats, 4-week mounted sessions, off-site clinics at Naval Medical Center San Diego, 32nd Street Naval Base, Naval Training Center at Liberty Station as well as other military installations in San Diego. We are an award-winning Certified Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship therapy center and have received Congressional recognition for our work with the military. We have a multi-faceted approach to the work we do which includes under saddle programs, experiential learning, groundwork with an emphasis in connection, relationship, and being in the present. Our goals are significant, and the results are extraordinary...92% decreases in suicidal ideations, 90% decrease in stress and anxiety, and 89% in overall emotional and mental health feelings of wellness and hope.
