Role of the Summer Camp Volunteer Coach

Summer Camp Volunteers are a crucial part of the success of the annual Refugee and Immigrant Community Soccer Camp. The energy, positivity, mentorship and commitment of volunteers makes the camp a special experience for SWB participants, the camp is truly something SWB participants look forward to every year. For some campers, the week becomes the entry point into long term engagement with Soccer Without Borders. Specific responsibilities of Summer Camp Volunteers include the following.

Summer Camp Volunteers work alongside a Head Coach who is a full-time or part-time staff member of Soccer Without Borders. The Summer Camp Volunteers serve in one of two roles, as Assistant Coaches, or as Group Leaders. The Assistant Coaches focus more on facilitating activities and leading soccer and team-building games, while the Group Leaders focus more on the engagement, safety, experience and wellness of the campers within their group. For all Summer Camp Volunteers, specific responsibilities include the following:

• Field Set-up and break down
• Managing soccer equipment and keeping the storage area clean
• Distributing donated soccer items and ensuring campers have the gear they need to play safely and comfortably
• Leading soccer and team-building activities
• Assisting with monitoring and evaluation, including taking attendance and camp registration.
• Assisting with art activities and health workshops
• Distributing/preparing snacks and nametags
• Chaperoning/supervising players throughout the day, and looking out for participant safety
• Cleaning the field and cafeteria at the end of each day
• Debriefing the effectiveness of activities with Head Coaches and fellow volunteers
• Actively seeking to create a better camp experience each day

Time Commitment

The Summer Camp Volunteer must be able to commit to the full camp experience. They are expected to be there from 8:30AM-2:00PM each day of the camp and attend an Orientation on Saturday, July 9 th from 10-1pm.
