WILDLIFE EDUCATION VOLUNTEER

Exhibit Hall Focus

TITLE: Wildlife Educator (Exhibit Hall Focus)

COMMITMENT: A minimum of one year

SHIFT FREQUENCY: Weekly 3.5 hour shifts, requirement to attend 3 shifts a month at a minimum.

DAYS & TIMES: Wednesday - Sunday, 9:45AM - 1PM & 1PM - 4:15PM

REQUIREMENTS

  • Age: 18+
  • Interest in connecting students with wildlife to inspire responsibility and respect for the world we share
  • Ability to bend and kneel, stand for extended periods on cement floors, and occasionally lift 25 pounds
  • Comfortability with public speaking and engagement, or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively (verbally and in writing) with staff, volunteers, and visitors
  • Participate and complete trainings
  • Pass a background check
  • Pay membership and training dues

BASIC DUTIES

  • Support the mission of LWE by engaging guests of all ages in experiential learning activities about conservation, wildlife biology, and the personal stories of the animals in our live collection
  • Engaging in educational programs with the public by working directly with animal ambassadors and utilizing natural history specimens and educational materials
  • Transport and handle program animals to engage visitors
  • Adapt program content and interact with students in a flexible, positive, and open-minded manner

TRAINING & CONTINUING EDUCATION

  • Satisfactory completion of all necessary departmental training
  • Quarterly scheduled education volunteer meetings
  • Volunteers are encouraged to pursue additional training opportunities available in the community on an independent basis

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

  • Excellent visitor engagement and public speaking skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow departmental directions
  • Patience and excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexibility in working effectively with other volunteers, guests, and staff

Description

Lindsay Wildlife Experience is a unique natural history and environmental education center where live, wild animals are just inches away. Founded in 1955 by Alexander Lindsay, Lindsay's programs and services are designed to help people understand human impact on wildlife. More than 5,500 injured or orphaned native California animals are treated at our wildlife hospital every year and 40,000 school children learn about the wonders of nature through classroom programs and tours.
