Purpose of Position
The vision of Wildlife Rescue Association of British Columbia is to continually improve the welfare of urban wildlife. Our mission is to provide leadership in rehabilitating wildlife and in promoting the welfare of wild animals in the urban environment.
We run a wildlife hospital located on a single site at the edge of Burnaby Lake. We treat over 6,000 wild birds and bats each year and provide public education through 30,000 calls to our Wildlife Helpline. Our Business Operations department plans, coordinates and oversees all our programs including development, communications, resources and volunteering.
Each year, 300 volunteers participate in a range of positions both on and off site. We are currently seeking a volunteer to volunteers to install and maintain the garden and landscape on the property of the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC. The landscape and garden are currently being tidied in order to install a wildlife landscape, including a wildlife demonstration garden. The Volunteer Hardscape Gardener’s main focus
is to assist in hardscaping the WRA garden.
Qualifications
We are looking for:
* Experience and knowledge in hardscaping gardens, landscaping, or a related field;
* Good communication skills;
* Ability to complete tasks independently with little supervision;
* Demonstrated reliability;
* Enjoys routine maintenance tasks;
* Prepared to work outdoors;
* Physically fit;
* Organized; and
* At least 18 years of age.
* Knowledge of native plants in BC is an asset.
Deliverables
The Hardscape Gardener is expected to ensure the highest standards of practice are achieved and maintained in accordance with the mission, vision and values of WRA, and to ensure adherence to all policies and legal requirements. All data and information will remain the property of Wildlife Rescue and be treated confidentially.
* Complete maintenance of the hardscape in the WRA garden within your skillset as necessary;
* Assist in installing the new wildlife landscape plan, including hardscape and planting;
* Practice natural pest control methods;
* Remove/control invasive species;
* Assist with keeping track of, and maintaining garden equipment and supplies;
* Work with volunteer work parties as needed; and
* Recording and logging all hours on MyImpactPage

Description
Wildlife Rescue Association was established in 1979 to rehabilitate wildlife affected by human activity and provide education to the public on co-existing with urban wildlife. Before Wildlife Rescue was founded, there was no rehabilitation service for wildlife in Metro Vancouver and members of the public had nowhere to turn when they found an animal in distress. Thanks to the determination of a small band of volunteers, a small rehabilitation centre was established at the Nature House on the north side of Burnaby Lake.
Today, Wildlife Rescue runs its wildlife hospital on the south shore of Burnaby Lake where it treats animals from around the province of BC. Since 1979 we have treated more than 100,000 animals. Metro Vancouver is developing rapidly and animals living in the urban environment face many challenges such as busy roads, loss of habitat, pollution, pet predation, poisoning, unsecured garbage and direct human cruelty. With a team of professional wildlife rehabilitators and an army of volunteers we are able to provide temporary refuge to a diverse range of animals. We are not a wildlife sanctuary and once the animals in our care are healthy and ready to live in the wild, we release them back to their natural habitat.
Our public education and outreach includes a wildlife helpline, as well as presentations and displays throughout Greater Vancouver. 80% of our funds come through donations and without support from the public, local business and the wider community, none of the work we do would be possible.

- Orientation or Training
- All Wildlife Rescue volunteers start with a minimum commitment of 100 hours. Approximately 4-8 hours a week on a consistent weekly basis, with a minimum commitment of 6 months.
- All volunteers must be 16 years or older and provide a Criminal Record Check, proof of up-to-date tetanus vaccination and full Covid-19 vaccination.
