Mission Statement
The Dwelling Place of NY, in the spirit of its founders, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, advocates for women experiencing homelessness due to trauma, in an atmosphere of safety, caring, compassion and respect.
Description
The Dwelling Place was founded by four Fransiscan nuns, all of whom were nurses because as they walked the midtown streets they saw many women sleeping on the street and eating out i of the garbage. Fast forward and though many things have changed, our basic mission has not and more and more women have found themselves living in a place of fear.
The Dwelling Place of NY Values
Commitment: We are committed to helping women in need and ending homelessness.
Quality: We provide services that center around individual growth and development.
Innovation: We provide uniquely designed programming to help women become more independent
and self sufficient.
Community: We connect with the broader community with shared value to assisting in finding
homeless women access to independent living.
Integrity: We are dedicated to serving our women and our community with the highest ethical
standards and transparency.
Our programs are designed to assist women out of a violent situation. Using trauma focused strategies women participate in yoga, gardening, art therapy and groups to assist with safety plans. Covid brought out huge numbers of women who were forced to remain with a batterer. We want to change that.
