Mercy Heritage Center seeks a creative and dynamic individual to become part of its volunteer team. The candidate will work directly with the MHC staff in organizing, inventorying, cataloging archival records and artifacts of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, as well as other related projects.

The ideal candidate is someone with a background or interest in music, musicology, fine art. This volunteer will help control, organize, and collect information for the Mercy music project, including but not limited to:

  • Identify and document music subject matter across the various collections.
  • If appropriate, catalog music-related artifacts according to professional museum standards.
  • Work with staff to identify collection holes and assist with related outreach activities.
  • Various other special activities, such as transcription, research, and working with a variety of audio and audio-visual formats.
  • If time permits, digitization projects and associated digital workflows.

Available hours to volunteer are from Monday-Friday, 9:30-5PM.

Location:

720 Heritage Center Place, Belmont, NC 28012, US

Mission Statement

As the central archives for the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Heritage Center preserves and relates the story of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. As a research and educational resource for the general public, its records illustrate the vibrant and relevant impact of the Sisters of Mercy on the changing needs of our times, and inspire visitors to make personal commitments to similar values.

Description

Mercy Heritage Center’s archives house the historical and administrative records of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas dating back to 1843. Our repository houses over 5,000 linear feet of archival records in thirty-four collections. These records document ministries like schools, hospitals and other programs. They also document the histories of individual sisters and the story of the Community itself. Record types include documents, books, photographic prints, audio-visual materials and artifacts. Our collections consist of records from the United States, South and Central America, the Caribbean and Guam, as well as individual ministries in various countries. More recent records post-2008 are held in collections of local archivists located in Belmont, North Carolina; Merion, Pennsylvania; Cumberland, Rhode Island; Buffalo, New York; and Omaha, Nebraska.
