Program Dates and Times:

  • The Summer Program will take place from July 5th to August 11th in the afternoons and early evenings. Sessions would be approximately 1 - 1.5 hours in length. Times for the Summer program would be between 1PM-6PM Monday to Thursday and we ask tutors to commit to at least one hour per week. Each center has different session start times, so there is some flexibility in scheduling.
  • School Year Program will take place at the end of September, Fall 2022 and run until the first week of June 2023. Volunteers contribute to the fulfillment of the Youth Tutoring Program’s mission by providing academic support, mentorship, and encouragement to youth at our tutoring centers. School year times typically take place between 4:20PM-7:40PM Monday to Thursday each week. We ask that volunteers commit to at least one school-year semester. You are welcome to volunteer 1-3 hours as your schedule allows!

Description:

  • Summer Program: Volunteers will facilitate interactive reading, science, games, and social emotional learning activities with small groups of 2-4 students.
  • School Year Program: Help individual students or small groups of students with reading and skill building in language arts and math. Involve students in stimulating learning activities. Make learning exciting, relevant and creative. Provide mentorship and support to students and help them improve their social emotional skills. Actively support the Community Agreements of the tutoring center to promote an inclusive environment conducive to learning.

Volunteer Testimonials:

How it feels to be a tutor at YTP: "like I'm helping, maybe if only a little bit, to the students becoming better learners and advocates for themselves" - a current tutor at YTP

We asked our volunteers what they enjoy most about tutoring with YTP:

"The students are amazing and I learn something new from them every session"

"Getting to know the kids... which is a huge difference from other youth outreach experiences. They teach me... how to be better at teaching and are just fun to hang out with"

"I think my favorite memories will always be watching my student experience "Aha!" moments. Realizing that I am helping this student learn something they previously had trouble with is very satisfying. I also appreciate the strong relationship that we have formed over the year and value it."

How This Helps Our Community:

Our Summer Program aims to extend and enrich the learning of our students during the summer break. We rely on dedicated volunteers like you! Our volunteering program offers support to students from low-income housing communities, entirely free of charge. The program depends on volunteer tutors!

We welcome everyone who wants to help and particularly encourage members of the Black community and people of color to volunteer with us. We serve a diverse group of students, 99% of whom are children of color. The majority of our students come from immigrant and refugee families.
