The Community is currently seeking volunteers to help with our ongoing meaningful project to help create high-quality educational packets for incarcerated individuals to utilize before re-entry into communities. These packets are intended to help better prepare individuals for diverse career opportunities after incarceration.

Volunteers will not be paid but will work on smaller tasks within the project packets. This volunteer work is remote with a possibility of being assigned to a collaborative team on the educational packet they are assigned to.

Qualifications for volunteers:

-Ideal applicants are upper-level undergraduates, and graduate students but will consider those with strong writing and research skills.

-Must have computer and internet access (this is a remote project)

-Must have strong writing and research skills (we will ask for a sample of your writing and research ability)

-Attention to detail

-Must know and be able to use Google Drive, Docs, etc.

-Have strong initiative; is a self-starter, but able to accept corrections and/or constructive criticism

Educational packets that are being created through this project will have a heavy focus on having all packets maintain the needs of those awaiting re-entry meaning that:

  • All information is researched and vetted thoroughly through different sources;
  • Written for the specific audience;
  • Deeply considerate of the circumstances and language used in the document;
  • Be able to overcome challenges by problem-solving and collaborating with your team (if you have one);
  • Understanding the circumstances of the packets and people reading them

We are already working on this project, therefore, interviews will be conducted and assignments assigned as soon as possible.

Mission Statement

The Community is a nonprofit devoted to fostering a motivating sense of community among those involved and interested in anti-mass incarceration efforts (everything from smart-on-crime policies to prison conditions to reentry).

Description

We are a 5½ year old AMI (anti-mass incarceration) organization of several highly educated currently and formerly incarcerated people and their loved ones devoted to fostering a motivating sense of community among those involved or interested in AMI efforts (anything from preventative measures to prison conditions and legitimate rehabilitation opportunities to reentry). We have so far focused on Wisconsin with a newsletter (the most widely-read AMI publication in the state with 7,000 incarcerated readers - nearly a third of the prison population - and over 400 free readers) and our STEM from Concrete Initiative to provide STEM education opportunities to formerly and currently incarcerated people, but we are now expanding our focus after receiving two grants. We need at least one volunteer to help no more than 15 hours a week with clerical and research tasks. They can be anywhere in the world so long as they have a computer and a telephone.
