Marin Ballet is the county's oldest and most-respected center for ballet. It will celebrate 60 years in 2023. The organization has collected many books, magazines, photos and files about dance and has a lovely library room. The collection is in need of organization. We are looking for someone with a librarian or archivist background, or just someone who loves organizing information. Depending on the time that a volunteer has to offer, the project could take several months.
More about Marin Ballet
Marin Ballet is a 501 3 charitable organization. 10% of our students receive tuition assistance and we also partner with local schools to provide dance instruction which meets California's arts standards. Currently, Marin Ballet provides dance programs for Coleman and Nicasio schools, more than 450 students. Over the years, instruction has been provided to underserved students from Marin City to San Rafael's Canal district.
Marin Ballet was founded in 1963 by Leona Norman with the assistance of the Marin Civic Ballet Association, founded by Max and Phyllis Thelen. It is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance. In 1971, the organization was able to buy its current building at 100 Elm Street, San Rafael, with the assistance of the Cowell Foundation, plus a large group of donors. Over the years, Marin Ballet has graduated thousands of students, including professional dancers Cynthia Lucas, Nancy Gallenson, Laurie Klein, Jane Greene, Roxander White, Elaine O'Malley, Joanna Berman, Alexandra McCullagh Newman, Silver Barkes, Robin Cornwell, Olivia Ramsey, and John Lam. Alumni credit the skills they acquired at Marin Ballet, including discipline, teamwork, self-assurance, perseverance, and artistry, with their success in a variety of professions.
Marin Ballet produces the county's most beloved Nutcracker performances. Hundreds of tickets are given away each year to underserved children. Other annual performance opportunities for students include Spring Showcase, Spring Concert, and periodic regional dance competitions. The summer program introduces students to diverse dance forms including contemporary, character, African, and folk traditions.
