Caring Hospice Services is looking for a caring and loving individual to be a Bereavement Volunteer and assist grieving families in their time of need.

Caring Hospice Services is a unique and holistic service designed to meet the social, emotional, spiritual, and physical needs of our patients and their families as they face terminal illness. Our volunteers are crucial to our service and mission to bring comfort and joy to those who need it the most.

Our bereavement program follows families of our hospice patients for 14 months after their loved ones have passed away. Bereavement volunteers provide support by assisting with scheduled mailings and/or making support calls to families.

The Bereavement Volunteer would report to the office in Monroeville (near UPMC East) once a week, any time between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM. You choose the day of the week and the time you would like to volunteer.

Other volunteer opportunities include:

  • Patient Companion - Visit the patients wherever they call home. Read a book, listen to music, watch TV/movies, talk about current events, or just sit and hold their hand.
  • Complementary Therapy - Massage Therapy, Reiki, Aromatherapy, Pet Therapy, Music Therapy, and Art Therapy.
  • Share A Talent - Perform for the patients by singing, dancing, doing magic tricks, etc.
  • Facility Activities - Caring hospice hosts many activities for the patients residing in a nursing/care home. Assist with painting, crafting, ice cream socials, decorating baked goods, and more.
  • Photography - Take pictures of the patients with their family and friends.
  • Gardening - Help our patients create or maintain their home gardens or help pot plants with our patients in facilities.
  • Cosmetology - Style and cut hair and paint nails for the patients.
  • Administrative Support - Assist our staff in the Monroeville office with filing, copying, shredding, etc.
  • Marketing Support - Assist our marketers with assembling care packages and gift bags.
  • Crafting - Make various items from the comfort of your own home to be delivered (by us) to the patients. Make blankets, memory pillows, stuffed animals, greeting cards, scrapbooks, fidget mats/blankets, and more.
  • Baking - Make delicious treats for birthdays, holidays, and events.
  • Phone Calls - Call the family members to check-in and see if they need any supplies or support.

"The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others."

Mission Statement

We are passionate about our mission to bring comfort and relief into the lives of those who need it most. Every day, our caring and compassionate staff works wonders in the lives of hundreds of terminally ill patients and their families. They replace suffering with comfort, despondence with good cheer, and despair with hope. We have earned the confidence of medical professionals and the eternal gratitude of thousands of patients and family members.

Description

Hospice is an approach in care that has greatly improved the way our society and particularly the medical community perceives end of life issues. The philosophy of hospice is simple and compelling: Individuals with life-limiting medical conditions should be made as comfortable as possible, and have their quality of life maximized, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. In practice, hospice focuses on managing and alleviating pain and symptoms while maintaining the patient’s dignity. Hospice fosters a love and appreciation for family and life experiences, and helps patients accept their situation with hope and encouragement rather than despair. Because no two situations are alike, hospice caregivers coordinate a plan of care that is specifically designed to meet the needs of each individual. As part of a comprehensive care approach, hospice care also addresses the logistical and emotional needs of the patient’s family. The hospice team of caregivers includes physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, therapists, volunteers - and most importantly - family members themselves. Because it is an approach, not a place, hospice care can be provided at home, at an assisted living facility, at a long-term care setting, or even at a hospital.
