Leadership U Program Overview

Leadership U (LU) is a unique leadership development and community service program available for Howard County (HoCo) high school sophomores. Eligible students must live or go to school in HoCo and going into their junior year of high school at the start of our 1-week summer team-building program. Students continue in the 4-month program in the Fall 2022 to foster leadership growth and civic engagement through three pillar areas:

  • Education on Community Issues (including Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion)
  • Development of Community Service Projects
  • Development of Student’s Unique Leadership Skills


About the Leadership U Steering Committee

The Leadership U Steering Committee is designed to help Leadership Howard County staff plan, steer, and evaluate the Leadership LU program. The Steering Committee consist of high school students, educators, and community/business leaders who organize volunteer opportunities, help with recruitment of new committee members and Leadership U candidates, participate in fundraisers, and engage LU students when volunteering at our Summer Week or Sunday Sessions.

The Steering Committee provides advice and assistance in the management of the program by:

  • Make recommendations for programmatic improvement
  • Serve as advocate/spokesperson for Leadership U
  • Helps with program implementation (including helping to plan portions of the summer week, phone calls, recruiting volunteers for chaperoning, working with mentors)
  • Serve as a resource for identification, recruiting, and vetting new committee members
  • Participate in the recruitment and interviewing of LU candidates
  • As available, attend at least one Summer Week and one Sunday sessions with the students

Serving on a Committee:
Steering Committee members are encouraged to serve on 1 of 6 committees:

  • Recruitment Committee
  • Interview Committee
  • Summer Week Committee
  • Leadership Toolkit Committee
  • Mentors Committee
  • Community Outreach Committee


Time Commitment
The time commitment varies based on your availability. However, Members are expected to attend 6 Steering Committee meetings held every other month on Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. starting in mid-July. Additionally, we encourage steering committee members to participate in student-related activities at least once per year.

Mentor and Volunteers Roles

Purpose: To mentor, coach, and support Leadership U (LU) students as they develop their leadership skills, and design and implement community service projects.

  • Orientation or Training
  • Steering Committee members are expected to attend six (6) meetings a year. Meetings are held every other month on Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. starting in mid-July. Members are encourage to participate in activities at least once per year.
