About The Petey Greene Program Inc

Location:

Mission Statement

The mission of the Petey Greene Program is to supplement correctional education systems by providing individualized tutoring for incarcerated people. We work to support academic achievement in prison classrooms in order to reduce recidivism rates and build stronger communities.

Description

The Petey Greene Program recruits, trains and coordinates volunteers to serve as academic tutors across 30 college campuses, 46 facilities, and seven regions. Although our volunteers are primarily college students, we do welcome community volunteers as well.

Our volunteers serve as academic tutors working one-on-one or in small groups with incarcerated students in correctional facilities in order to support their academic achievement. We primarily support students enrolled in high school classes or high school equivalency (GED/TASC) programs. We also support students in English as a Second Language.

The volunteer opportunity is a weekly commitment that lasts a full academic year (two semesters), with tutoring typically lasting 1-2 hours, excluding travel time. Consistency is crucial for our students' academic success and is something that sets us apart from other volunteering programs. As such, volunteers are required to tutor weekly throughout the year, with the exception of academic breaks, exam periods, and holidays.

All volunteers are required to complete two mandatory trainings; a Department of Corrections Volunteer Orientation and a Petey Greene Program New Tutor Training.Additionally, the new volunteer must also complete the necessary facility clearance paperwork.
