ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: Open Heart Magic

You have the opportunity to become a pro-bono leadership Director on the Open Heart Magic (OHM) Board of Directors. OHM is an exciting, growth-oriented nonprofit that empowers and transforms kids who are hospitalized in pediatric intensive care, oncology departments, burn units, and wherever else kids are working to turn the corner in their treatment. OHM is focused on this mission through two inspiring and exciting programs: Bedside Magic and Magic Delivery™.

For a quick inspiring overview of how OHM helps kids in hospitals, please check out this quick video.

As we come out of this pandemic, restart, and accelerate programming, the newly advanced, restructured, and focused Board of Directors has been setting course for returning to - and growing - our reach of 12,000 kids. OHM has twelve different children’s hospital partners across three states, including Lurie Children’s in Chicago, the University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, and the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland. As the organization returns to staffing capacity, our focus will move to sustainable national expansion.

OHM’s Board of Directors currently has 23 members and is growth- and sustainability-minded, comprised of pro-bono executives passionate about the strategic opportunities to expand our impact to help kids in children’s hospitals and build sustainable growth to create lasting programs as our legacy.

Role description

The Board’s Executive Committee is looking to nominate a pro-bono Specialist with expertise in public relations or marketing with expertise in reputation management and thought leadership to help attract executive trustees to our organization. The Director will also play a role in sharing the exciting success stories, strategic choices, and unique management style of OHM, the individual members of our Board, our Founder and Executive Director, and the unique community of volunteers in Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. This campaign will help build executive and corporate awareness, providing support to the Board and other OHM initiatives for partnerships and collaboration.

This will be a hands-on role where you, together with the Board’s Executive Committee, the Founder/ED, and staff, this Director Specialist will roll up his/her sleeves to plan, prepare, and launch campaigns to promote OHM as a national organization, to expand to new states, and to the hearts of even more kids in hospitals. Our Director of Marketing and ED direct the social media campaign, so this focused strategy will be pursued through both identifying opportunities for broader OHM community recognition, as well as white papers/engaging posts on LinkedIn, press releases, and other social media campaigns focused on delivering results to our Board’s strategic and partnership goals.

Requirements as a leader on our Board of Directors

As a member of the Board of Directors, you will be expected to help bring resources and funds annually to the organization, help make the Board of Directors’ annual back-tie gala successful, attend and actively participate in 6+ Board meetings/calls throughout the year, and be available as-needed to engage with OHM senior operational staff on questions/issues relevant to the Specialist role. Serving as a Director also provides unparalleled networking and engagement opportunities, as well as a chance to give back to an incredibly important cause. It’s a fun and exciting organization with a dedicated group of professionals passionate about our people and those we are able to help each year.

To be nominated for this role

Board positions for OHM are competitive in nature. All executives on the Board of Directors serve as unpaid pro-bono members of the OHM Board of Directors. This specialist role will cycle on a renewable one-year term.

If you have the passion to help hospitalized children get their magic back, and you are interested in applying your expertise to a dynamic organization with other motivated Directors, then please submit a resume or quick professional background summary with any experience relevant to this role plus any experience serving on a Board of Directors (not required) to katyleoni87@gmail.com.
