For more than 30 years, Northstar Tutoring’s mission has been to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. We achieve this by matching students with their own volunteer tutor/mentor who helps them once a week to complete their homework, study for upcoming tests/quizzes or work on supplemental education materials.
During the summer break we continue tutoring to ensure that students are not only avoiding the 'summer slump' of learning loss, but that they can advance in the subjects they struggle the most with. Since the students don’t have homework, we prepare educational packets for each student to work on with their tutor during each session. Given the learning loss due to online learning over the past two years, these students need support now more than ever.
The summer sessions are July 11th-August 19th and we meet with students on Tuesday and Thursdays (most volunteers sign up for just one night but you are of course welcome to do both!) from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Hyattsville Teen Center (3911 Hamilton St.)
A few additional facts:
- Once the summer session is over, if you want to continue with the tutoring program, we can keep you with the same student into the 2022-2023 school year
- No previous teaching experience is required (approximately 90% of volunteers have never taught/tutored before)
- We work with students in grades K-12 and volunteers can request a specific age range to be matched with
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate
Please consider making a different in a Hyattsville student’s life this summer! For more information, please reach out to Jennifer Townsend at JTownsend@northstartutoring.org.
