Starting in June, Red Shed is helping to put better infrastructure in place at one specific Animal Shelter.

This shelter was already poorly funded, under-resourced and overcrowded BEFORE the war.

It is now unable to cope with the amount of Ukrainian animals it has been asked to take in and Red Shed is looking to help them.

There are TWO blocks of dates for volunteering in June.

Friday 10 - Friday 17 June 2022

OR

Friday 17 - Friday 24 June 2022

1 Week each block.

You MUST arrive by the Friday date(s) and leave on the following Friday.

Unfortunately, there are NO partial weeks available. This is due to logistics and schedules.

Apologies for this.

WHERE

Eastern Hungary - Kisvárda 20 km from the Ukrainian border near Zahony.

AREAS NEEDED

We are looking for the following skills:

  • Builders
  • Carpenters
  • Painters
  • General Handy Persons
  • Animal Handlers (must be fully certified)

Anyone who is physically fit for manual work to help re-build this shelter.

It will be tough work if you are not used to it, however extremely rewarding to see the difference you will have made to the lives of these animals.

SHELTER CONDITION

This shelter is currently in very poor condition.

It is run by amazing volunteers who are doing their very best with extremely limited resources.

All of the animals are taken care of as best as they can, but they need our help.

WORK INVOLVED

Red Shed volunteers will work in the following areas:

  • Cage/Kennel fix up (to include painting of kennels, fix up of floors of kennels)
  • Temporary roof attachments (to protect the animals from the elements of hot sun/snow)
  • Runs for shelter dogs
  • Clean up of storage/building areas
  • Other duties of care to the animals

CHALLENGES

You will face some reasonable challenges on this trip:

Weather - It will be hot! (Details of what to wear etc. will be provided to you)

Shelter condition - The workload will be heavy, but as mentioned, incredibly rewarding!

Language barriers - The regular shelter volunteers do not speak English; however there will be a translator on the first couple of days and Google translate is our friend!

The volunteers are absolutely lovely and are very happy for us to help!

Falling in love with the animals - Yes, you will fall in love with all of them and some of them will steal your heart outright! Especially Cheeky Charlie - resident watchdog and annoyer of the other dogs :)

About The Red Shed

Location:

Mission Statement

Red Shed acts as a partner animal welfare organisation that works with underfunded shelters across various economically marginalised communities. Its mission: Build fully functioning animal welfare shelters in areas where animals are displaced due to war, climate change or other extraordinary circumstances. Create Red Shed Learning Centres as part of the shelter builds in order to educate, inform and raise awareness of animal welfare issues. Deliver emergency rescue services temporarily in dangerous zones where animals are in serious danger.

Description

Red Shed is an animal welfare organisation that exists to fulfill a growing need of animal displacement due to war, climate change and other extreme circumstances.

It was set up in Dublin, Ireland by Sandy Sheerin who envisioned The Red Shed as a place where sick, neglected, homeless and refugee animals could be initially homed, rehabiliated and cared for.

Multiple Red Sheds are forecasted to be built over the next 5 years where animals are endangered or displaced.

Red Shed's goals are:
- To become synonymous with emergency Red Sheds where conflict or extreme circumstances emerge that is harmful to local animals.
- To create Red Sheds in areas where local communities can benefit from the care given to animals.
- To educate, inform and raise awareness to the general public on the work carried out in emergency rescue services for animals.

Red Shed Programs:
2022 - Voluntary Programs to help rebuild or restructure existing animal welfare shelters in areas where shelters are underfunded and in substandard condition. (Particular focus on Ukrainian border shelters and Ukraine)
2023 - 2025 - Build new Red Sheds across various countries where turmoil has emerged and the livelihoods and survival of animals is at great risk.
