We are looking for someone who is passionate about literacy. As a Shelby Literacy Center Board Member, you understand that literacy is the key that unlocks a lifetime of personal and professional success. When asked the question of what you do for a living, you would ask whether that was your vocation or avocation.
Shelby Literacy Center is at a turn-around phase, and Board members are integral to our mission. Our current main needs are building resources, brand awareness, and program development.
Please only apply if you aren't currently on another Board.
What Board members will do:
- Spend 8-60 hours a month (depending on the role) working with the SLC and fundraising requirements
- Must be able to donate $500 a year or provide a corporate match
- Participate in fundraising events by volunteering and/or attending, bringing friends, colleagues
- Participate in donor appeals by sharing messages
- Reach out to personal and professional contacts
- Network with current donors
- Friend us on social media and share with their contacts
- Clearly state our Board-approved mission and vision
- Share their personal connection to literacy and mission in an elevator speech
- Actively recruit other Board members as needed and bring on their contacts for committee roles
- Be curious - ask questions about SLC operations
- Participate in emails/messages/Sharepoint site - open and read

Description
Our vision is fostering lifelong literacy throughout the Mid-South, and we work to do that in three ways: communication and culture classes for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL); family literacy events and information; and structured reading intervention for 4th-8th grade, to help them find the confidence and knowledge to improve reading and successfully stay and complete high school.
