About Reading in Motion

Location:

Mission Statement

Our mission is to get every student reading at or above grade level within the first years of school through the power and discipline of the arts, especially students whose environment or circumstances put them in greater need of support. To accomplish our mission, we partner with schools and train their teachers to deliver an engaging and innovative reading improvement program, Benchmarks, for 50 minutes a day during school hours throughout the school year. We target schools with poor reading scores and high percentages of low-income students where we provide our specialized Coaches and other services on-site to inspire students to learn and teachers to grow. Established in 1983 as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization, we have served more than 50,000 students and dramatically improved their reading skills.

Description

Since 2003, we have partnered with hundreds of schools in under-resourced neighborhoods in Chicago and trained their teachers to deliver our engaging, innovative reading improvement program in the classroom. The results are outstanding. By the end of each school year, students in Reading In Motion classrooms are consistently achieving their grade-level reading goals. Even in the face of declining progress within Chicago Public Schools (CPS), our students have continued to excel. To date, we have improved the reading skills of more than 50, 000 students. Every year thousands more gain the potential to fulfill their dreams, to become the next president, inventor, writer, teacher and the potential to help end the cycle of illiteracy that exists in under-resourced communities.
