Become a STEM Mentor with the New York Academy of Sciences!
Apply here by January. 8th: https://gsa.smapply.io/prog/ASMPmentor

The Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program (ASMP) is currently recruiting undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and STEM professionals to mentor elementary and middle school students with the goal of inspiring a lifelong interest in STEM. In partnership with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), participants are placed at one of our many partnering school sites around New York City and commit to mentoring one-hour in person sessions each week. These sessions will be supported by a curriculum of 60-minute-long hands-on STEM activities, with the goal of supporting mentees' STEM identities while offering the scientist new agency in the role of a mentor. Participating Mentors receive training in STEM curriculum and youth development, and work with on-site staff to implement 10 sessions from February 13th - May 26th.

For more information about this program, please visit https://www.nyas.org/asmp

Apply by January 8th here https://gsa.smapply.io/prog/ASMPmentor

ASMP Mentors gain

  • Science communication and leadership skills
  • Mentoring and teaching experience
  • Opportunities to network and participate in professional development events
  • A stronger connection to their community
  • Receive a $500 stipend with the completion of 10 sessions
  • Travel Reimbursement
  • One year complimentary membership to NYAS

Additional Benefits

In addition to the chance to share their passion for student enrichment activities in science and practice important mentoring and teaching skills with students, participants will receive a $500 stipend at the end of the program term as well as a complimentary year-long membership to the Academy.

Afterschool sites are located throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Up to $150 of the cost of travel to sites will be reimbursed to scientists. NYAS will try to ensure that the one-way commute for mentors does not exceed 60 minutes (please consider this factor in figuring your capacity for participation this program term).

Program Expectations

What is Expected/Required?

  • Share a hands-on STEM lesson to a group of afterschool students once a week for 10 weeks. Sessions typically last ~60 minutes and are run in partnership with a site staff member

Spring 2023 curriculum:

During spring 2023, we will be implementing a 10-week curriculum focusing on light and technology. This course is designed to inspire students to develop a love of science through a collection of fun phenomena-based experiments. Guided by scientist mentors, this course will expose students to the wide range of exciting careers that are possible in science and technology with a focus on how our daily life shapes our environment. Students will learn to apply scientific methodology and concepts to real-life examples and be able to discuss the critical shift towards a more flexible usage of electricity.

Feel free to email Danielle Mink-Bellizzi dminkbellizzi@nyas.org or asmp@nyas.org with any questions along the way.

Wishing you lasting health, happiness and success into the new year.

With gratitude,

Danielle + NYAS Team
