The Northwest Cooperative Development Center (NWCDC) is a regional nonprofit that focuses on developing and supporting Cooperatives across the Pacific Northwest. NWCDC primarily supports cooperatives in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho but has also supported projects as far away as Alaska and Hawai’i. Founded by cooperatives in 1979, the Center has grown into the Northwest’s leading provider of services for co-op business development. A co-operative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise. Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. Headquartered in Olympia, Washington, NWCDC works with co-ops of all sectors. About one-half of NWCDC's programs involve preserving low-income manufactured housing communities by forming resident-owned cooperatives able to buy their manufactured home park and operate it democratically in perpetuity. The remaining half of NWCDC's programs surround converting existing businesses to worker or consumer-owned co-ops and helping start-up groups form new co-op businesses. Our work includes coaching co-op members and boards, drafting business and strategic plans, developing systems of governance, and building co-ops' organizational capacity. Members serving with NWCDC would become experienced in the cooperative business model and will acquire experience taking a project through many stages beginning with research and visioning and ending with launching and evaluating success.

Member Duties : Hybrid Position - Some Remote Service Possible. Full 40 hours a week. Flexible schedule, either 5 or 4 days a week. The goal of this VISTA project is to evaluate NWCDC's current processes, craft new systems, document successful ventures, and propose new methods for delivering training and assistance. Accomplishing these goals will result in more affordable homes being preserved and more cooperative workers being empowered. In the course of fulfilling these objectives, a VISTA member would become experienced in the cooperative business model and will acquire experience taking a project through many stages beginning with research and visioning and ending with launching and evaluating success. Key objectives include 1) systems improvement within a nonprofit 2) mapping and documentation of clients, sectors, and essential job functions 3) participation in and improvement of training delivery including the preparation and delivery of a new training events.

Description

Greater South Sound VISTAs serve in the offices of our region’s public and nonprofit agencies, guided by the four Key Principles of VISTA Service: End Poverty, Build Capacity, Empower Communities, and Create Sustainable Solutions. Our Host Sites (the agencies hosting VISTAs) are spread across the Greater South Sound region, not only in Thurston County but also in Pierce, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Mason, Lewis, Jefferson, and Clallam Counties.

We’re looking for applicants of all ages, from all backgrounds, who are passionate about social justice and economic equity, self motivated, and team oriented. With VISTA, you choose where you submit your application - select the Host Sites that you’re the most passionate about. Each Host Site creates an individualized VISTA Assignment Description (VAD) to plan out the VISTA’s upcoming Year of Service, so each VISTA position is unique. Some VADs involve being out in the community regularly, whereas others might involve a lot of time in the office analyzing data or designing a website. Sample responsibilities listed in recent VADs include: developing trainings for food bank volunteers, revising policies for a shelter, creating a public awareness campaign to prevent human trafficking, writing grants for a free childcare program, and more.
