United Way of Pierce County (UWPC) is committed to placing those most impacted by community conditions at the heart of our work to lift 15,000 households out of poverty and into self-sufficiency by 2028. In this VISTA position, you will be at the center of our community engagement work and our equity work. Using a variety of engagement opportunities, you will be out in the community listening to individuals and families share what is getting in the way of them truly thriving. UWPC is also working to increase awareness about issues related to equity and social justice in our community and across the country. This work starts with UWPC working internally to be an anti-racist organization. UWPC is also working with our community partners, our Board, and the community at large to provide opportunities for learning and gaining insights and awareness of how inequity negatively impacts the people we serve. This project also supports financial empowerment of Pierce County households through our United to Thrive program where trained volunteers and financial professionals help families get connected with benefits and resources along with providing financial empowerment workshops and coaching.

Member Duties : Hybrid Position - Some Remote Service Possible. Hours: Service hours will generally be normal business hours, Monday-Friday with occasional evening or weekend events/activities. UWPC’s goal is to build strong families in high-need, low-access communities by implementing projects and strategies that break down barriers to both children's and their parents’ success. UWPC is entering a new three-year VISTA project focused on engaging the community to center those most impacted by community issues in the process to find solutions. In this position, you will fight poverty by engaging community members to assess community needs, support individuals and families, expand partnerships, and cultivate resources (volunteer, in-kind and monetary). Specific activities will include project coordination, needs assessments, collecting data, convening advisory groups, building capacity for internal equity training, grant writing, and additional activities.

Description

Greater South Sound VISTAs serve in the offices of our region’s public and nonprofit agencies, guided by the four Key Principles of VISTA Service: End Poverty, Build Capacity, Empower Communities, and Create Sustainable Solutions. Our Host Sites (the agencies hosting VISTAs) are spread across the Greater South Sound region, not only in Thurston County but also in Pierce, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Mason, Lewis, Jefferson, and Clallam Counties.

We’re looking for applicants of all ages, from all backgrounds, who are passionate about social justice and economic equity, self motivated, and team oriented. With VISTA, you choose where you submit your application - select the Host Sites that you’re the most passionate about. Each Host Site creates an individualized VISTA Assignment Description (VAD) to plan out the VISTA’s upcoming Year of Service, so each VISTA position is unique. Some VADs involve being out in the community regularly, whereas others might involve a lot of time in the office analyzing data or designing a website. Sample responsibilities listed in recent VADs include: developing trainings for food bank volunteers, revising policies for a shelter, creating a public awareness campaign to prevent human trafficking, writing grants for a free childcare program, and more.
