Help Prevent Learning Loss This Summer: Tutor & Mentor a Student Online

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: L.A. Works

Quick Overview: With only a couple of hours a week, you can provide mentorship and emotional support to a student that will boost their confidence, improve academics, and increase classroom engagement. Take the first step in becoming an online tutor for 3rd - 6th grade students who don't have the benefit of paid tutoring.

Background: The past two years have exacerbated existing educational inequities, with many students suffering from significant learning loss. Only 50% of students test proficiently in English and 40% test proficiently in math. Even more distressing, the average student loses 17-34% of the prior year's learning gains during summer break, and for children who are already struggling, a helping hand is all the more critical-students who fall behind often never catch up. The path to improving these numbers is through extra instruction, which is where you come in!

MISSION: Our goal is to increase engagement, improve academic outcomes, and strengthen students’ social safety net. This opportunity offers free tutoring and mentoring that addresses the widening academic gap and provides families with the support they need to succeed.

IMPACT: With your help, we can close the achievement gap that has widened during the pandemic. In a safe one-on-one environment, you and your student can work in partnership to build a strong foundation upon which your student can learn, grow, and flourish.

REQUIRMENTS:

  • No tutoring experience required!
  • Access to a computer with reliable internet.
  • Some basic familiarity with Zoom.
ONBOARDING PROCESS: You will be provided with training, support, and resources to help you and your student succeed. To join this community, you will need to complete the following:
  • 10-minute application & short interview
  • 1-hour Zoom training
  • A training manual (approximately 2 hours)
  • A LiveScan background check (can be reimbursed upon request)
