Recruiting Organization: Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine

Our Aquarium hosts marine and freshwater animals from all over Maine. Some animals include sea stars, lumpfish, and turtles. Volunteers will help with programs or animal care.

Position Summary

Volunteers can help in one or more of the areas listed:

Helping with programs:

  • Learn about museum education
  • Support interactive, animal programs
  • Develop a new program with Aquarium staff as training allows

Helping with aquarium and animal care:

  • Learn about tank cleaning and maintenance
  • Check water quality
  • Discuss results with Aquarium staff
  • Learn about the animal health and safety, including
  • Feeding and enrichment
  • Filter maintenance

Position Requirements

Required skills:

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Background check required for anyone 18 years old or older
  • Follow Museum & Theatre COVID safety guidelines
  • Engage respectfully with everyone
  • Passion for working with children
  • Strong communication skills

Preferred skills (one of the following):

  • Experience in hands-on aquarium maintenance
  • Experience with fish, amphibian, or reptile care
  • Experience leading interactive animal programs

Time Commitment

  • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9-11 or 1:30-3:30
  • Minimum 2 hours a week for a minimum of 3 months
  • Training and onboarding: 4 hours

Working Conditions

  • Masks must be worn during required sessions
  • Comfortable helping in noisy environments (ear protection will be provided if needed)
  • Comfortable helping in a busy environment
  • Seating can be made available
  • Will use toxic chemicals
  • Will use sharp knives


  • Receive 2 person membership after 25 hours of service volunteers
  • Receive 4 museum passes annually
  • Receive 4 theatre tickets annually
  • Ongoing training opportunities
  • Free Parking
