The NYG&B is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of New York family history. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, our mission is to preserve, document, and share the history and stories of families across the state of New York.

For the past 150 years, we have been preserving valuable genealogical and historical records, producing genealogical scholarship, and providing crucial resources to help amateur and professional genealogists navigate New York genealogy research.

The volume of material we aim to preserve is significant and we rely heavily on volunteers to help digitize these records. We provide training on the use of the digitization and image processing equipment which are both easy to learn. For indexing, we are eager to find volunteers with some experience looking at old records and reading handwriting, but we also provide training on this.

A typical volunteer shift is 3 hours during office hours (Monday - Friday, 9am - 5 pm).

Interest in genealogy is welcome, but not mandatory. Volunteers should be very comfortable using a mouse, looking at a screen, and sitting in a chair for 2-4 hours.

We have a wonderful community of volunteers. Join us!

We follow local and federal COVID-19 guidelines. At this time, all visitors to the office, including staff, are required to be vaccinated and boosted and to wear a mask.
