Pigeons are amazing! They are spectacular, brilliant creatures and one of the first domesticated animals. Yet unfortunately, tons of domestic pigeons are abandoned putting both them and the wildlife at risk.

Dreaming of a Chance rescues these abandoned domestic birds and provides them with a forever home. We also work to educate the public about various bird topics helping to prevent abandonment.

To spread the word about our sanctuary and educate more people about birds, we attend events around the Hudson Valley. This volunteer opportunity involves tabling at these events. Certain events would be the full show we would have you volunteer for and longer shows would have you splitting shifts potentially. We would have you pick up event supplies, setup, and talk to people about the sanctuary at the show. If you are tabling for the whole show, we would have you break down the setup and drop it back off to us otherwise the second shift would be responsible for breakdown and drop off of supplies/donations.

This is a pretty flexible position as you would be signing up for which shows you are available to table at and for which shifts. Examples of events we go to are Stormville Flea Market and Pawling Farmer's Market.

This would require an initial training period to learn about the sanctuary and how tabling works. We may have you initially table with an experienced volunteer to start as well.

Mission Statement

Dreaming of a Chance’s mission is to rescue abandoned domestic pigeons from around the Hudson Valley and NYC and provide them with a forever home. We also strive to educate the public about proper bird care, the effects of abandonment on the environment, as well as how to spot and help abandoned domestic birds.

Description

We opened at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic knowing that a ton of animals were going to be displaced due to the struggles the world was facing. After receiving so many inquiries to help, abandoned domestic pigeons quickly became our primary focus. Very few places are able to help take in domestic pigeons around NY and in our opinion, they need help the most.

Abandoning a bird puts them at extreme risk of death by predators. If they are lucky enough to survive predation, starvation, dehydration, injuries or disease claim them. Domestic birds have no survival skills and many have been genetically modified to decrease flight capabilities putting them more at risk.

Volunteers help us care for all these once abandoned birds that call our sanctuary home and create a support system that enables us to help more. Volunteers are an integral part in helping us further our mission and are able to help in a variety of ways. Since our start, we have helped over 120 birds. This is thanks to wonderful individuals like you. We would love to have you as part of our team. Let us know if you're interested in volunteering.
