Position: 2022 Minnesota Food Shelf Survey Volunteer

You can play a critical role in helping to inform food shelf improvements and impact programming across the hunger relief sector in Minnesota by collecting meaningful responses from food shelf shoppers (clients) and ensuring a welcoming and confidential environment as they participate in the 2022 Minnesota Food Shelf Survey.

Why the Minnesota Food Shelf Survey is critical for the hunger relief sector:

  • Center hunger relief work on the voices of people experiencing food insecurity
  • Standardize feedback loops to inform and improve food shelf services
  • Gather data to inform system improvements and investments

Role Responsibilities:

Data Collection at Food Shelves (100%)

  • Articulate the purpose and goals of the 2022 Minnesota Food Shelf survey to multiple audiences: Food Shelf leaders, volunteers and shoppers
  • Ensure appropriate materials are displayed and available for shifts at food shelves
  • Serve as a liaison to food shelf leaders (staff & volunteers) during each data collection shift so that messaging is consistent and shoppers are respectfully and confidentially invited to participate in the survey
  • Work with food shelf staff to determine the most appropriate process for administering the survey based on food shelf space, food distribution process and in alignment with survey sampling guidelines
  • Serve as direct point of contact with shoppers to consistently invite them to participate in the 2022 Minnesota Food Shelf Survey
  • Ability to travel to across the state of MN to administer surveys shifts at food shelves
  • Participate in Data collection volunteer training (1.5 hours via zoom)

Keys to Success in this Position:

  • Experience interacting positively with diverse populations
  • Comfortable approaching shoppers and asking them to complete the survey
  • Drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Able to attend volunteer training (1.5 hour training via zoom)

Nice to Have:

  • Previous experience surveying or interviewing people
  • Previous data collection experience
  • Bilingual (language needs: Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Russian)

Time Commitment:

    • Total time requirement:
      • 15 hour goal over 8-10 weeks, (2-3 hour shifts)
      • Business hours (8 am - 4 pm) primarily, some evenings required
    • Project dates: July - mid August
    • Work site: Across the state of Minnesota
  • Reports to: FFEN Community Engagement Coordinator

Implementing organizations for the 2022 Statewide Survey are University of MN Extension and Foundation for Essential Needs (FFEN), with funding provided by MN DHS, SNAP-Ed, and Hunger Solutions MN. The 2022 Survey is the continued evolution of the important work first started in 2017 and 2019 by SuperShelf . All 2022 Statewide Survey Interns and Volunteers will be supervised by FFEN.

Foundation For Essential Needs (FFEN) is an entrepreneurial, innovative and nimble nonprofit focused on increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of local food shelves. FFEN engages skilled, pro-bono volunteers to offer pragmatic, no-cost consultation and equipment improvements to food shelves adapting to meet the changing needs of their community. Since 2013, FFEN has positively impacted over 200 food shelves in Minnesota. This local work informs FFEN’s broader efforts in supporting both professional development opportunities and advocating for systems change at the local, regional and statewide levels. FFEN’s multi-level approach is essential to creating a statewide hunger relief sector that ensures both equitable access to healthy food and respect for the dignity of those who receive it.
