VOLUNTEER TUTORS FOR ADULTS LEARNING ENGLISH
ORGANIZATION: LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF SOUTH SARASOTA COUNTY INC
Please visit the new page to apply.

This is a volunteer opportunity to help an adult change their life by learning to understand, speak, read, and write English. We have 40 adults waiting for tutors in North Port.
After attending training, new tutors will have the opportunity to select an adult student. Some pairs meet only once per week for one hour. Others meet longer and/or more often. It depends on the tutor and the student's availability. Training materials are available for tutors to check out.
Our Literacy Office in the North Port Library at 13800 S. Tamiami Trail is staffed by a part-time Coordinator who is the first contact for new volunteers and students. Contact Karen at nort.port.literacy@gmail.com to arrange a meeting or call on Tues. - Thurs. afternoons 941-861-1320.
Tutor training is provided. North Port has a large number of Ukrainian immigrants which is growing due to the war in their country. This area has a diverse population, and typically we have adult students each year from as many as 50 different countries.
Literacy Volunteers also has an office in the William H. Jervey Venice Public Library at 300 Nokomis Ave. S. We have fewer student requests for service in Venice, and often more volunteers. Many Venice volunteers tutor at the North Port Library because of the high demand for tutors there.
