Application Assistants will meet with Afghan clients to pre-fill pages 1 through 4 of Form I-589, gather and organize supporting documents. This includes engaging in thoughtful and measured conversation with clients to gather and confirm application questions.

Conversations with clients take place in person, with interpretation between Pashto/Dari and English facilitated via a telephone-based service.

Appointments are scheduled for four hours. At the end of the appointment, Application Assistants will convene with the volunteer Pro Bono Attorney assigned to complete the application to share pertinent details and hand-off the client and case.

Volunteers may sign up for upcoming events at any time, but must complete all required training, especially Preparing Form I-589, before their first scheduled appointment.

Required Training: Volunteer orientation, Confidentiality, Legal Compliance, Trauma-Informed Interviewing, Working with Afghan Clients, Preparing Forms I-589 Pages 1-4, G-28, and I-1145 - available now at the NALC Volunteer Training Center

    5 Application Assistants are needed Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
