Mission Statement

The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation’s is dedicated to achieving a future without breast cancer by engaging the public and the scientific communities in innovative research on cause and prevention.

Description

The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, an accredited 501(c)(3) public charity, was founded in 1983. The Foundation’s mission is to achieve a future without breast cancer by focusing on prevention and finding the cause.

While advances have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, we still don’t understand what causes breast cancer or how to prevent it. The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation is dedicated to identifying where and how breast cancer begins and is engaged in innovative approaches to conducting and inspiring research that will contribute to progress in this field. Visit us at www.actwithlove.org.

Some of our recent projects include:

  • The Army of Women Program, giving all women and men, with or without breast cancer, the opportunity to partner with researchers and take breast cancer beyond a cure.
  • The innovative Health of Women Study, created in 2012 to identify the cause and cost of the disease through an online cohort.
  • A study of women with and without a history of breast cancer to explore whether bacteria or viruses are found in breast ductal fluid.

The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation is dedicated to shifting the focus of research to go beyond a cure to identifying the causes and ways to prevent breast cancer. Part of this commitment is to raise awareness of the physical and emotional cost of the cure by documenting the unavoidable collateral damage that results from current treatments. The Foundation is a trusted resource for the public to learn more about breast cancer risk assessment, detection, prevention and treatment.

The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation’s Army of Women initiative has two key goals:

  • To recruit women and men of every age and ethnicity, including breast cancer survivors, women and men at high-risk for the disease, and healthy women and men, to partner with breast cancer researchers and directly participate in the research that will lead to eradicating breast cancer once and for all.
  • To challenge the scientific community to shift the emphasis of research beyond the cure to focus on breast cancer prevention research by identifying the cause.

To date, more than 373,000 women and men have registered with the Army of Women to learn about new breast cancer research and to sign up to participate in research projects. (www.armyofwomen.org)

The Health of Women Study will track thousands of women (and men) over time to learn what causes breast cancer, and how to prevent it. HOW will also study long-term breast cancer survivors in order to get a better understanding of how they are beating the odds. The initial HOW Study questionnaire covers basic demographics, reproductive history, and general health measures. Participants with a history of breast cancer are invited to complete questionnaires related to their diagnosis and treatment. Questionnaires are currently in development for family health history, diet and exercise and environmental factors. This is the first time a study of this size and magnitude is collecting data entirely online. In just over a year, more than 42,000 women and men have registered for HOW and the number is growing every day. (www.healthofwomenstudy.org)
