Help Seeds in the Middle raise awareness of food insecurity in central Brooklyn - on your bike!

Help us lead and/or join the second Food Desert Awareness Bike Ride in Brooklyn, where we take.a tour starting in Park Slope at Grand Army Plaza and then ride through central Brooklyn neighborhoods so everyone can personally see what food insecurity looks like.

These neighborhoods are primarily minority and have among the highest Covid-19 death rates in the city, along with high rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease - all which could be prevented if the communities had. more access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

You will get to meet parents, community leaders and children who work with Seeds in the Middle to transform food deserts into healthy places to live and learn.

The tour will go through Crown Heights, Flatbush, and Brownsville and even possibly south Williamsburg.

This is part of Seeds in the Middle's campaign to raise awareness of food injustice and health and food disparities in Brooklyn in the hope the NYC Council and Mayor and funders will provide the dollars to support the communities to build their own healthy businesses - like farm stands, edible gardens and cafes featuring fresh dishes and smoothies and juices.

Let us know if you are an experienced bicyclist who would like to take a lead and help us design a route to the schools and places Seeds in the Middle works.

If you would rather help make and serve fresh OJ or lemonade- kids can do this, too - at one of our sites for the riders, let us know!

Help us use this bike ride as a fundraiser. Any ideas on this would be great. We have a suggested donation of $25, which would include a fresh OJ on the way!

Sign up for the bike ride at bit.ly/fooddesertbikeride

PS - if you can't do May 22, we will possibly be doing another on June 12.

About Seeds in the Middle

Location:

153 Warren Street, BROOKLYN, NY 11201, US

Mission Statement

Seeds in the Middle partners with students, educators, parents & their communities to access all opportunities, beginning with improving health, enhancing arts education and greening their environment. We empower and educate all to get healthy and scale educational and social disparities. Our pilot schools are in central Brooklyn, a neighborhood with among the city’s highest obesity, diabetes, and heart disease rates. We teach how to grow, market, cook, access and prepare fresh food, how to exercise & engage in the arts, all the elements needed to promote life-changing lifelong health. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. We cross cultures. We transform gray into green, destitution into inspiration.

Description

Seeds in the Middle offers joyful, healthy interventions that nurture the whole child and address the multiple obstacles blocking low-income children and families from getting healthy. We teach how to grow edible gardens, run a student-led Hip2B Healthy Market, bring chefs into schools, started soccer, running and fitness programs at school and in the community and music and arts in the schools. We integrate professional development for teachers so that a healthy lifestyle and environmental stewardship becomes organic and sustainable in the school community. To build community, we created Soccer for Harmony tournaments and the Crown Heights Farmers Market. In two years, we have engaged more than 1,000 families, and students and teachers report changing their habits to include more fruits and vegetables, and fitness. This is a pilot for any school and Seeds in the Middle plans to replicate.
