ORGANIZATION: RECOVERYWORKS

The Respite, Resource and Recovery (R3) Center is designed to provide respite, engagement and case management services including access to showers, laundry, storage and mail for adults who are unhoused suffering from drug and alcohol addiction, mental illness and seeking recovery, employment, education and stable housing.

The Volunteer Shelter Operator provides a welcoming atmosphere for the guests of the R3 drop- in center and Medical Respite Programs. This position helps to manage the day-to-day operations and housekeeping of the facility. This includes maintaining a clean, safe, healthy and organized environment. The Shelter Operator is central in supporting both the day and evening staff in creating a welcoming and well-functioning environment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Manage the front door and desk to assist guest sign-in and orderly work flow.
  2. Prepare and help serve meals (lunch and dinner).
  3. Maintain a safe and sanitary environment including ongoing housekeeping throughout entire facility.
  4. Keep guest laundry caught up and organized for easy access and pickup.
  5. Pick-up deliveries and organize cabinets, clothing, donations, hygiene items, etc.
  6. Answer front doorbell and manage requests/needs in collaboration with other staff.
  7. Maintain common area, courtyard, empty trash, organize shed.
  8. Evaluate guests’ needs through regular contact, including crisis intervention as necessary.
  9. Monitor guest computer use, keep resource folder up to date, sort and organize mail.
  10. Ensure parameter of the building is free of trash and loitering.
  11. Assist with managing the community milieu through regular, informal contact with all guest.
  12. Participates in team and supervisory meetings as assigned.
  13. Performs additional duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Knowledge, work history and/or education specific to milieu management, day-center operations, addiction, mental health, housing and/or homelessness.
  2. Ability to both engage guests in services and set firm limits and expectations.
  3. Skill in operating office equipment, including computers (including e-mail), software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel) and telephones.
  4. Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  5. Able to prioritize multiple job responsibilities, work independently, and exercise good professional judgment.
  6. Able to advocate and negotiate in an assertive but tactful manner both internally and with community agencies, to have clients’ need met.
  7. Able to maintain client confidentiality.
  8. Able to maintain a flexible, but consistent volunteer work schedule.

EDUCATION (MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS):

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Experience and interest working with unhoused persons.
  3. General familiarity with issues related to substance misuse and/or mental illness.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must be able to carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Works primarily in a climate-controlled office environment with frequent interpersonal interactions.

COVID PROTOCOLS

All RecoveryWorks employees must provide proof of vaccination or submit weekly negative COVID test results.

  • 08:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays
  • 12:00 PM to 04:00 PM
    Wednesdays
