Learning starts the day we’re born, so it’s important for caregivers to have opportunities to help build those early learning and literacy skills right away! Play is the best way for young children to learn and it builds important bonds between children and their caregivers. The Duluth Public Library strives to provide a variety of opportunities for families to play and learn together through their library collections, in-house activities, and outreach programs. This position will help build the library’s capacity to provide more of these opportunities for families and improve access to existing programs and collections. This is an excellent opportunity to stretch your creative muscles, expand your understanding of early learning and literacy, connect with a variety of organizations in the Duluth area, and help children and families play and learn together. The Duluth Public Library is an innovative, open-minded, dynamic place to work, dedicated to a lot more than just books! DPL has a rich history of community engagement, providing invaluable resources to those most in-need, and promoting a love of learning and discovery for all ages, but especially for Duluth’s youngest citizens. If you are a creative, detail-oriented individual who loves independent and collaborative projects and have a passion for early childhood and family education, this could be an amazing opportunity for you!

2) Improving caregivers’ access to and use of library’s collection of toys for checkout.
3) Expanding the library’s promotion of collections, programs, and services in under-resourced neighborhoods.
4)Developing new early literacy outreach programs and help pilot those programs in the community.

Description
The Duluth Public Library (DPL) was established in 1889. Today there are three locations: Main library downtown, Mount Royal Branch and West Duluth Branch. Each branch tailors its services to its unique patron base, but all branches have worked toward the same mission through the materials they offer for checkout, free events, guest performances, and access to the internet and supported use of devices. Further, the library has taken strides to improve equity for its patrons by eliminating late fees on checked-out materials and by providing access to social services in the library including county social workers, MNsure enrollment assistance, and tax preparation services. In 2018 DPL had 51,636 card-holding patrons who checked out 795,723 items, and attended 743 free programs (430 were programs for children and families).
DPL has always placed a high priority on supporting children and families. A team of dedicated youth services staff provides enriching events and activities for kids of all ages to enhance literacy and learning. Improving school readiness in Duluth is currently the library’s top strategic goal. To address this, the library has launched Every Child Ready Duluth (ECRD), through which the library is developing a coalition of community partners that will work together to help bridge the gaps in school readiness in the community, and support families and childcare providers.
