Kinship/Grandfamilies are family members that take guardianship of a family member when the parent is unable to fulfill their role. Often with little notification, they step in as a caregiver, and often for a long haul and generally with child welfare involvement. Grandfamily Coalition steps in with outreach programs and resources to help along the journey. We provide social/support groups, social events, parenting support, resources and more.

Our mission is to build a community of support around grandparents, other relatives raising kin, and the children in their care by creating a place where grandfamilies and services connect.

We are seeking volunteers to fulfill that need:
The last Thursday of every month, Grand Family Coalition provides a support group for grand members to share their struggles and support each other. During these support meetings, GFC offers childcare for our members so they can attend these meetings without worrying about their kiddos. We need a volunteer to watch our support group kids from 12:15-2:45pm. This is a once-a-month commitment and consistent volunteers for this position will be paid for their time. If you want to serve these unique and deserving families, and have some fun with some great kiddos, please contact us, thank you!

Mission Statement

Mission: To promote the unity of grandfamilies by creating a place where grandfamilies and services connect. Purpose: To provide programs and social activities that encourage an inner community of grandfamilies. We provide positive thinking and emotional well being while bringing awareness to our community concerning the needs of grandfamilies.

Description

Grandparents and other Kin raising grandchildren or other kin, have experienced trauma, the child welfare system, loss of a family member due to drugs/alcohol abuse and or mental illness and more. Through our own experiences we know that resources and services are not always easily accessible and often times kinship caregivers are not aware of the services that are offered, isolating these families from each other and the resources they need. Our programs are designed to provide educational opportunities, community connection to others in their situation, resources and a bit of respite from their grandchildren/kin.

We know we can do this. But we don't have to do it alone.

We hope to inspire the children to be involved as well as the caregiver, giving kinship families a chance to acquaint themselves with others in their situation. We accomplish this by organizing gatherings which allow them to be involved as they feel comfortable. We've created a space to be social and supportive.
