The Student Global Ambassador Program (SGAP Leaders) is a nonprofit located in Rockville, Maryland with offices in Montclair, NJ. We are seeking a People & Culture Lead for SGAP Leaders. He/she will build and maintain a diverse and empowered workforce through an inclusive hiring process, comprehensive training plans, and ongoing support and mentorship throughout each employee’s time with SGAP Leaders. This includes coaching, consultation, and conflict resolution, as well as training to ensure individuals in managerial positions have the tools to share power and effectively manage. The prospective candidate is tasked with creating and maintaining a positive work culture that reflects the organization’s mission and philosophies while using a racially just and anti-oppressive lens. He/she reports to the Executive Director.The candidate must have a knowledge of--and passion for--youth leadership development through the lens of STEM, sustainability and social justice.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Actively works to enhance an organizational culture by managing employee relations, working with coordinators, volunteers and staff to address sensitive issues (e.g., interpersonal issues between co-workers and personal problems impacting professional life), and developing recommendations for leadership to enhance organizational climate and facilitate organizational-wide collaboration, which may include to assess and address the organizational needs.
  • Updates the employee handbook and personnel manual to reflect relevant labor laws, policies and procedures; creates, analyzes, and revises personnel policies, ensuring that they are properly communicated and recorded.
  • Oversees full cycle recruitment, selection, and onboarding of skilled employees and volunteers through job postings, candidate screening, interviewing, extending offers, completing required new hire paperwork, background checks, and arranging new hire orientation and training
  • Facilitates opportunities for staff training and development through a consistent and updated onboarding and orientation process, ongoing skills training, and provides consultation to team members on how to strategically utilize allotted professional development funds
  • Coordinates annual performance reviews, researches best practices related to the process (performance measures and 360-degree feedback), supports other managers to ensure that annual evaluations are effective and delivered in a timely manner
  • Maintain employee wage structures and benefits programs and inform team members of wages and benefits by studying and assessing wage and benefit needs and trends; recommend wage structures and benefit programs to the organization; direct the processing of wage changes and benefit claims
  • Evaluate insurance benefit contract bids
  • Responds to Workers’ Compensation claims and unemployment insurance inquiries
  • Facilitates grievance process and reports to the Executive Director
  • Maintain employee files with relevant information and answers employment verifications
  • Tracking sick leave, personal hours, and vacation time, and support teams in making sure staff are using their vacation time; ensuring team members correctly utilize payroll system
  • Ensure team members adherence to local, state, and federal employment laws and rights
  • Supports team and community members in interpersonal communication and conflict resolution, using venting policy, restorative processes, and coordinating and leading mediation conversations as needed
  • Provides regular mentorship to staff, and providing growth-oriented feedback
  • Ensure legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable state and federal requirements; ensure these legal requirements are met during all operations of the organization
  • Liaison with SGAP Leaders legal counsel
  • Dedicate time to building authentic relationships with community members and creating a welcoming and hospitable environment

Required Qualifications

  1. Minimum of two years of increasingly responsible specialized experience in an HR generalist role and/or progressively responsible roles involved in development and delivery of comprehensive human resources services or Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business management, social services, or related field.
  2. Experience working with and in a non-profit organization, preferred. Certified professional in human resources, (PHR) preferred.
  3. Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.
  4. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written skills.
  5. Ability to work and collaborate with others, including listening, supporting others to create and implement solutions, be self-reflective, and share power.
  6. Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to thrive in an unstructured environment.
  7. Demonstrate experience in: problem-solving, creation of work plans and timelines, decision-making, leadership, and prioritization of tasks
  8. Excellent attention to detail and demonstrates an exceptional work ethic/integrity.
  9. Ability to safeguard, protect and maintain confidential information.
  10. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel, Google Suite, Quickbooks online.
