As severe weather events and large-scale disasters become more extreme, more people rely on the Red Cross for help. And the need for compassionate Shelter Volunteers has never been greater.
The Red Cross is recruiting and training emergency shelter volunteers NOW so we can be ready to serve our community needs when the time comes to act.
Shelter Volunteer Responsibilities:
During large disasters, volunteers support the day-to-day activities within a shelter which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information, or other areas within a shelter.
Volunteers can choose to support local shelters in their community or can deploy across the country to assist when disasters strike.
Time Commitment:
Volunteers will participate in year-round activities to prepare for Sheltering including training, logistics planning, and meetings. If the need arises for large-scale disaster response (ex. hurricane or wildfire), see the time commitment below:
- Local Regional Response (within 50 miles of home address): Volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each.
- Beyond Regional Response/Deployment: Deployment means traveling (Red Cross arranges travel and pays expenses) to a disaster area for a minimum of 14 days working between 12-14 hour shifts.
