Recruiting Organization: Feerick Center for Social Justice of Fordham Law School

The AmeriCorps VISTA LEEAP Project at Fordham Law School’s Feerick Center for Social Justice aims to expand Center and partner organization capacity to promote the rights and address the problems facing marginalized and low-income New Yorkers. The two VISTAs will help build and support Center programs that address debts burdening New Yorkers with low income and little or no wealth. Collection of those debts through the courts causes serious harm and hardship. The core work is to continue to build and implement a volunteer-based remote legal assistance program and to re-start the in-person program to reflect public health conditions and updated technology for individuals being sued for consumer debts and to expand partnerships with community based organizations. The Feerick Center for Social Justice is committed to recruiting, hiring, and retaining a staff from different cultures, races, educational backgrounds, life experiences, socio-economic classes, sexual orientations, ages, genders, and abilities.

Member Duties:

The VISTAs will liaise on a regular basis with community-based service providers that provide legal services for debt collection and operate limited-scope consumer clinics regarding recruitment, training, and retention of attorney and other volunteers and engage in ongoing recruitment of volunteers interested in remote volunteer opportunities, especially through law school alumni networks and bar associations and utilize online platforms to recruit volunteers. The VISTAs will also organize and help to develop basic and advanced training programs for volunteers.

You will also have monthly check-ins with the FC senior staff, weekly program meetings with senior staff, monthly professional development workshops led by the VISTA Leader, and opportunities to attend NYC networking and training events.
