Operation Jump Start's mission is to help low-income, first-generation college students get in, stay in, and graduate from a four-year college. We do this by providing academic support, mentoring, and exposure to a broader world.
Our College Access program pairs 8th-10th grade Long Beach students with a volunteer mentor, who provides guidance, support, and fun outings to students who are in the early stages of their career and college planning.
The mentor serves as a role model and friend to support students in reaching their full potential. This includes one-on-one time getting to know and building trust with your mentee; planning and attending enriching outings to enjoy together; and offering support as the student navigates their college planning. Many of our mentor/mentees forge truly meaningful bonds, maintaining their relationship long after the formal mentorship program ends!
The time commitment is 4-6 hours a month with your mentee, over a span of 1-3 years, in order to follow a young student's journey throughout their early high school years.
Our mentors tell us that this is a rewarding and life-changing experience. This is a heartwarming opportunity for adults who wish to give back to our youth.
The requirements for this opportunity are:
- Must be a college graduate
- Must be over the age of 24
- Must pass background check
Thank you for considering us! Feel free to reach out directly to our Community Outreach Coordinator at chelsea@operationjumpstart.org with any questions.

Description
OJS is a nonprofit, college access mentoring program that provides supplemental enrichment programs to low-income, first generation students who show academic promise. Like our students, mentors are hand-selected and matched with a student/mentee as an adult role-model. Mentors guide their mentee through their high school career as an additional support, guide, and most importantly, a friend.
Mentors must be have a BA degree or in the process of obtaining a BA. Minimum requirement is 1 year commitment. Attached you will find the complete mentor application packet and the current calendar of events.
Once your application is received, one of our program managers will review and contact you to schedule an interview. This process helps us ensure that we are matching the perfect mentor-mentee team.CAUSE AREAS
