Quick Overview:The Machao Orphanage is located in Makueni, Kenya (about 3.5 hours south east of Nairobi). Makueni county is located in the southern part of Eastern province and borders Kitui to the east, Taita Taveta to the south, Kajiado to the west and Machakos to the north. The county covers an area of 8008.8 kms and comprises of eight districts namely Makueni, Mukaa, Mbooni East, Mbooni West, Kilungu, Nzaui, Kibwezi and Kathonzweni. It has three local authorities which are Wote and Mtito Andei town councils and Makueni county council. It has five constituencies which are Kaiti, Kibwezi, Kilome, Makueni and Mbooni.

In 2005, we responded to an immediate need - to house the original 13 children and many that were on the waiting list. By 2009, we built the dorms, latrines and bath houses. In 2010, we provided clean water thanks to Living Water International; 2011 we put in a solar panel; 2013 we built a greenhouse and chicken coop; and 2014-2016, we put in solar irrigation and a couple of more solar panels.

Without family or home, a Kenyan orphan is often destined for a life that leaves them vulnerable and uneducated. A hungry, impoverished, and seemingly hopeless life.

Mission: There are currently 43 children living in dormitories at MACHAO. We would like to bring at least 10 volunteers with us on MACHAO’s next Service Trip, and one of these people could be you. Travel with us to Kenya (Makueni and Kisumu), where the need is great and your help will truly make a difference. We fly out of LAX to Dubai, and then from Dubai to Nairobi, Kenya. You will be engaged in loving acts of kindness during your stay: wash the children’s feet and see their faces light up with delight; place new shoes directly on their feet; read to them at night before going to bed (a ritual we’re sure you conduct with your own children); assist the children with their chores, and the list goes on. It’s an experience unlike any other and a journey that WILL transform your life.

Through social media, we are aiming to create awareness for our nonprofit and raise funds for our programs!.

Impact: Social media posts on FB, IG, and LinkedIn have been increasing traffic and getting us increased views on our YouTube channel. We aim to continue and build upon this early progress.

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities: Create and schedule weekly posts and follow up on platforms to further engage people to discover us. We expect the Social Media Specialist to spend around 5-7 hours a week creating/scheduling posts and following up on social media. This role is volunteer-to-start with potential to transition to a paid position within the organization that offers lots of opportunities for growth. We're also looking for dedicated individuals that can help our team spread the word (social media), seek grants, build donor relations, create & solidify agendas, and organize major events.

Requirements: Social media and marketing experience, Canva, Adobe, platforms such as Vertical Response, Mailchimp, or Constant Contact, creating Instagram reels, and other editing social media platform experience.

Accessibility: This volunteer opportunity is 100% remote. Minimum 6 months commitment.

Mission Statement

"MACHAO" is an acronym for MAkueni Christian Home for Assisting Orphans. The mission of MACHAO is to assist the destitute children, whose parents have been victims of death, namely HIV/AIDs. MACHAO focuses on providing these orphans with basic requirements such as: food, shelter, clothing and schooling facilities. The future vision of MACHAO is to expand the home facilities to cater to the increasing number of orphans and impoverished children. The group was formed in 1996 by seven Christians of the Africa Inland Church within Wote Division in Makueni District. MACHAO is a non-profit organization both in Kenya and in the U.S.A. and appeals to well wishers to support the program.

Description

In July 2005, Dr. Carolyn Rowley was introduced to the orphanage via Greater Heights Baptist Church located in Los Angeles, California. Greater Heights Baptist Church supports the missionary efforts of Joseph Mutunga and his family. Dr. Mutunga is one of the seven initial supporters of MACHAO. After Dr. Rowley's first trip to the orphanage, an assessment was made as to the children's need. In March 2007, Dr. Rowley formed the Machao Orphanage Foundation (a non profit organization) dedicated to supporting the efforts of the seven supporters, and the needs of the orphaned and impoverished children. The Machao Orphanage Foundation is a non profit organization in both Kenya and the U.S.A. Funding will support: The construction, building and furnishing costs for the new facility which will house 80 children in the impoverished region of Makueni, Kenya. Utilities (i.e., firewood, charcoal, paraffin). A child's education. The children in the orphanage are required to attend school. Participating in our 'Love-a-Child' program will support the purchase of a child's uniform, tuition, fees, books, and school supplies. Toiletries, clothing and medical supplies. Personnel. Currently, MACHAO has one house mother (matron) and a watchman. As the number of children grow, the orphanage will need at least one more matron and another watchman. Construction of a water system. Today, the Machao Orphanage Foundation continues to raise awareness and money for the new orphan facility and educational support.
