Mission Statement
femLENS’ mission is to visually educate and make technologically aware the most vulnerable and resourceless women of our society through documentary photography education made accessible by mobile phone cameras and cheaper point and shoot cameras.
Description
femLENS is an open laboratory of shared thought, knowledge, tools and ideas, an international community designed to give space and voice to women.
femLENS is the darkroom where women can develop their own vision and have a chance to become change agents themselves.
Today’s cultural and media representation of women is not inclusive and diverse. Men and women are often portrayed in stereotypical ways, and traditional roles in society are emphasised. This misrepresentation and the message behind needs to change, so that a political, economic, and social equality of the sexes is possible.
Founded in 2015 as a volunteer driven organisation by the photographer Jekaterina Saveljeva, femLENS works as a capacity builder delivering free workshops to teach women - especially women and girls from economically and culturally diverse backgrounds - documentary photography techniques to tell stories visually by using cameras and the easily available tools such as mobile phones and other cheaper alternatives.
We believe that everyone in society should be accountable for promoting a culture of equality of the sexes and their representation within the media industry and the culture in the world, everyone and especially women.
We organise exhibitions, are building relationships with the media, and continue offering support to past workshop participants to continue their photographic practice. To date, one of our students, a Syrian refugee in Lebanon, won $5000 in a photo competition.
