Position Title: Board Attorney
Purpose: The Attorney assures that the board is up to date with best practices to maintain the HBGF tax- exempt status in line with state, local and federal laws and continue the board’s governance.

The Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden is a one-of-a-kind heritage location that was created to preserve some of the area’s most treasured gardens. The Garden's mission is "Connecting the community to nature through a diverse and beautiful collection of historical gardens". The Highline Botanical Garden Foundation was incorporated in 1999 with the purpose of creating and supporting an eleven-acre botanical garden in North SeaTac Park in the City of SeaTac, WA. The garden includes- an English style shade garden, rose garden, Japanese garden, orchard, green house and propagation area, and community garden. Within each of these gardens are rare perennials, natural paths, open lawns, native woodlands, ponds and water features. The Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden is community asset, we welcome all visitors and provide a refuge to relax and enjoy nature’s beauty. HBGF is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse staff and will honor your experiences, perspectives, and unique identity. Key Responsibilities:
· Attend all meetings of the membership and the board.
· Review and create contracts for the organization and highlights areas of concern as well as areas for potential negotiation.
· Assures that the Board of Directors is compliant in state and the federal government with the authority and responsibility to oversee and govern the organization, ensuring that its assets are used exclusively to further the organization's tax-exempt purposes.
· Assures compliance with state labor laws and federal anti-discrimination statues and employment law, so the board makes appropriate employment decisions that protect the organization and its employees.
· Perform other duties as defined by the Bylaws or Board Policy.
Qualifications: The Board Attorney must display a commitment to the organization and an understanding of the organization and its principles, mission, goals, services, and the responsibilities and relationships of governance of record keeping. The Attorney must also display the following:
· An ability to successfully work with and maintain a productive relationship with the executive director, staff and board members.
· Previous nonprofit attorney experience.
· Create a safe environment for decision-making.
· Serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization and fully engage to advance the HBGF mission.
· Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings.
· Participate fully in one or more committees
· Adherence of the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws.
Responsible to: The board of directors, Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden membership, and the public.
Length of Appointment: The term is 2 years.
Time Commitment: Approximately 5 hours per month.
